Damianitza was established in 1940. The winery is located in Southwest Bulgaria – in the Struma River valley. This is the sunniest and the warmest vine-growing and wine-making region in Bulgaria where vineyards grow on the stony hills surrounding the river valley. Protected from the severe winds coming from the north and exposed to the soft influence of the Mediterranean, the sunny lands and their volcanic soil ensure superb fruit vintage. The winery is dedicated to making premium wines intended for connoisseurs of the unique authentic taste. The individual approach to every lot of wine aims at minimum processing in order to reveal as much as possible the nature of the product. Blending is used to find and add the missing element to the puzzle of the wine taste instead of seeking balance through processing. The vintage time is when the required organoleptic characteristics of grapes are achieved. Grape-gathering is made manually in 10-kg crates. Grape is sorted by hand.
The most important vineyards include the No Man’s Land region – the 10km strip of land between Bulgaria’s primary border and the main frontier with its southern neighbours - a narrow strip of land, which previously separated the worlds of Socialism and Capitalism - is an environmental paradise, pollution-free with preserved wildlife. Тhe vines here bask in the sun, producing succulent and rich fruit. The first No Man’s Land red vintage was born in 1998 in the vineyards thriving in the virgin ‘no man’s land’ strip between the state borders.
The distinctive individuality of the Damianitza wines comes from the Broad leaved vine of Melnik and the related Early melnik - two Bulgarian varieties unique for this viticultural region. The variety Broad leaved vine of Melnik , also known as Melnik, is among the oldest varieties in the world and unique for Bulgaria. It grows mainly in the region of Melnik and the nearby villages. Melnik is a variety that grows ripe late - grape-gathering is in the middle of October. Wine from this variety is fruity, with soft tannins and typical taste. Some wines of this local variety have aroma of tobacco and fur and they are good for aging in barriques, which gives warmth and refinement of taste.
Further Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which also grow in this region, ensure making superb wines with great complexity and balance. The winery expands its range of wines and now it makes refined wines of the Rubin variety – a unique cross of Nebbiolo and Syrah, created in Bulgaria more than half a century ago and grown only in the South central region of Bulgaria.
The most famous brands of Damianitza Winery are No Man’s Land, Kometa, ReDark и Uniqato; these wines have won many awards at world competitions as Mundus Vini – Germany, Decanter World Wine Awards – Great Britain, International Wine Challenge – Great Britain, Vinalies Internationales – France, the National Vine-growing and Wine-making Chamber – Bulgaria.
